My busy month of August

Tue Sep 1, 2009, 6:08 AM
  • Mood: Satisfied
  • Listening to: All I Need Is a Miracle -Mike and the Mechanics
  • Reading: Shackleton's Way (for my leadership class)
  • Watching: I Dream of Jeannie
What the title says. ;)

So in July I was living in the apartment by myself for a few weeks until my roommate got back, right? Like me, she was looking for a job, and she actually got one that she went to college for--a teaching job! However, she's teaching three grades with a total of about eight students, in a tiny little town in Nebraska called Basset, which is about a four hour drive away from Omaha. Needless to say, she moved out, took all her furniture, and I was left with a bed, computer (which I finally got hooked up to the internet, YAY), desk, small TV perched on Rubbermaid containers, and college moon chair. I didn't have any real chairs or couches, or end tables (I did have a small coffee table), or even a dining table and chairs. Nor did I have a job.

However, right when I got back from the Booe family reunion in Madison, Wisconsin (which was actually a lot of fun), I got two calls for job interviews. One was at Barnes and Noble (although it was for working in the café rather than actually with the books), and the other was for Bag 'N Save, a grocery store. I thought the interview for the B&N job went better than the BNS one, although I would have preferred the BNS job because it had better hours. (Thirty five--not quite full time, so no benefits, but still a decent amount.)

To my surprise, though, I got offered the Bag 'N Save job. :XD: So now I have a job--as a grocery store cashier! Oh, thank you, four years of college! ;p No, in all seriousness, I know the economy's in the toilet and I'm grateful that I have a job at all. And I'm actually getting okay at ringing up the purchases and counting out change. I'm not much of a math person (English major and all, you know), but I can add up change faster than I would have thought.

Then, about a week and a half ago, my parents came up to visit me, brought me more furniture (including a recliner and a dining table/chairs), and then after Dad had to go back to Columbus because he had to work, Mom took me shopping and bought me, well, just about everything I'll need. :) Dishes, cooking utensils, cleaning supplies, a vacuum, and perhaps most importantly, she even took me to Nebraska Furniture Mart and got me a COUCH. A very cheap yet quite comfy couch. And a DVD cabinet. :) For the first time in over two years, I can actually keep my DVDs in their cases now! And when I went home last weekend, Mom let me take a bunch of wall hangings she had, too, including her portrait of Thomas Jefferson... :) So now my apartment actually looks like someone lives in it. :D

And you know, not that sharing living space with Pam was bad, because it wasn't... but God, do I love living by myself. If I ever seriously contemplate marriage, somebody smack me upside the head, will ya? ;)

So everything's going pretty well! I haven't been paid yet, but I should be getting paid on Friday... I hope. I need money. ^^; But I have a job now, and my apartment is furnished, so I'm quite happy. :)

On Saturday I had my first graduate school classes! In the morning I had Leadership and Management in Libraries and Information Agencies (what a mouthful), and in the afternoon I had Introduction to Information Technology. I think the classes should be doable for me. The bulk of the work is online--we only actually meet in class around five times the semester. And those are always on Saturdays, and when I got my job I specifically said I can't work Saturdays, so that won't conflict. So yay for being a student again. :)

I do have a lot of work to do for those classes, though, plus my work schedule and actually taking care of my apartment, sooooo... not that they were ever really officially open (or closed), but requests are now closed. Sorry about that, especially to the people who had requests waiting, but in addition to having no time, I also haven't felt like drawing for a long time. I've been more into writing fanfiction when I find the time, because I currently have three unfinished fanfics (for three different fandoms) that, when finished, should be multi-chaptered. I'd like to finish at least one (preferably all) of them, and make room to start new ideas. ^^; Damn brain of mine. I've got an idea for an I Dream of Jeannie fanfic. No, seriously. I've been watching it lately and bought all five seasons on DVD (they were only %15 each at Borders! That's a damn good deal! I couldn't pass it up)... okay, yeah, new fandom, I'm an idiot. ^^;

Have a great September, everyone, and again I'm sorry for not being around here as much, but it can't be helped. ^^;

Wow, you have been busy! Sounds like things are going great for ya.
Hey, nothing wrong with I Dream of Jeannie. I love that show myself. ^^
I loved living alone till I met my husband. Now, the kids run the house. XD

I know what you mean about being busy! It was great to hear how things are going!

It's such a stupid yet funny show. :XD: And it's a great show to watch to unwind after working, I've been finding. Now if only the fanfic idea would just stay put for awhile while I deal with other things... ^^;

I can imagine that the kids run the house! Isn't that the way it always goes? ;p

So true! Hehehe It is good for some laughs and to unwind. Awesome, have you tried writing down the basic plot you thought out or maybe just a few notes? That is what I do.

Yes! And now they out number us. ^_^

Busy month indeed. I can definitely sympathize, but can't do more than wish you the best of luck.

Yeah, I should write out at least a little outline of it. Right now, though, three other stories are kind of fighting for my attention. ^^; Too many ideas and too little time.

Education is a glorious thing. Just think of the job I would have had to take if I DIDN'T have a college degree! ;)

Thanks!
